Freedom of Information
The monarchy is not covered by the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The FOIA only covers public bodies and, according to the logic of the Act, there is no public body at the pinnacle of our constitution. Republic believes this is wrong and should be changed.
Some information is obtainable, as it is held by various government departments which are covered by the FOIA. We are therefore conducting an FOI campaign to use the act to retrieve pertinent information from such government departments about various aspects of the monarchy.
What you can do
- Write to your MP and ask them to support the campaign to get the monarchy included within the remit of the Freedom of Information Act.
- Write to the Justice Minister:
Mr Jack Straw MP
Secretary of State for Justice
Ministry of Justice
Selborne House
54 Victoria Street
London SW1E 6QW
- Let us know if you think there's something we can investigate using the FOI Act.
- Lodge your own FOI requests, particularly to your local council if you've had a royal visit.
